The day I learned how to make coconut oil at home for my natural hair, that’s the day my life completely changed. It may sound as though I am exaggerating but, E-very-THING changed, the way I eat, how I cooked, I was also able to cut back on spending for my toiletries. Now, I find ways to make most of them from coconut oil like deodorant and toothpaste.
So today, I want to share with you the goodness of making your own DIY coconut oil from home.

So as you can see, coconut oil is now really valuable in my daily life and I save money too!
It costs me $1 USD per coconut, and I usually get 12 – 14 ounces of coconut oil for every 6 nuts. Also, I don’t waste anything from the coconut. I get to use shredded coconut that is left over and include it in my coconut recipes and smoothies and I even make coconut flour.
How to Make Coconut Oil at Home
To begin you will need to make Coconut Milk from real coconuts and let it rest in the fridge overnight (at least 24 hours) so that the cream rises to the top and solidifies. I have not made coconut oil using coconut milk or cream from the can, I am assuming it may work similar to this.
One thing to note, if you choose to use a masticating juicer such as the Omega J8006. You can skip the overnight step, any juiced milk can be placed on the stove top on a low to medium heat and simmered until finished.
One day I will have an Omega Juicer, my oh my, I tried it out when I visited Trinidad and being able to use my mom’s Omega was like heaven sent. I felt as though I could make coconut milk for the whole country (ok, maybe not). It makes the coconut milking process soooo much easy, no need to blend as in my coconut milk tutorial.
Ok, let’s get to making coconut oil.
Remove the coconut milk from the refrigerator that was resting for 24hours. The cream would have risen to the top with the coconut water settled below. The cream has all the oil that we will now skim off the top and cooked on a low to medium heat.
The water that is settled at the bottom can be used for making smoothies. Be sure to use within the next day since it will begin to deteriorate quickly.
Coconut cream is now placed on a low to medium heat and left to simmer, but stirred every 20 minutes to evenly distribute heat during the cooking process.
As you can see the texture begins to change, the cream appears clumpy, but keep stirring, you are on your way!
Soon you will begin to see the cream getting more brown in color as the process continues.
Continue to stir every 20 minutes until the coconut oil starts to separate from the protein left over from cooking.
Strain using a muslin cloth and that’s it !
There you have it! Coconut oil for you to enjoy any way you like it. It stays liquified because of the hot climate in the Bahamas, therefore, depending on where you live, coconut oil may be solid at room temperature.
